Heritage Documentary

Two community art films, both funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Looking Back to Looking Forward - 2015

This documentary film and art installation explored the history of Vulcan Amateur Boxing Club and Hull’s Fish Trades Gym, touching on the decline of industry and the experience of both the local Fishing and Romany Traveller community.

Working with young VABC members—including pupils from Referral Units and former young offenders—I led workshops in filmmaking and art theory. The participants stepped behind the camera as crew, interviewers, and editors. Together, we digitised 1950s–60s archive film, and shot and hand-processed our own black-and-white Super 8mm footage of live fights. The project culminated in a live boxing event and screening inside the historic gym.

Adrift - Hull, Hessle Road, and Away - 2013

This project brought local young people together to create a short film about Giroscope’s work and the real issues facing youth in the area.

I taught the group camera skills and editing so they could shoot and produce the film themselves. Alongside managing the project and budget, I worked with local schools, pupil referral units, charities, and the probation service to offer practical, hands-on creative training to the participants.
